The Amnye Machen pilgrimage gathers Tibetan people who come to celebrate Machen Pomra, the most important deity in the Kunlun ranges in Qinghai state of China. When I followed the southern part of the pilgrimage in 2014, it was the year of the Horse in Chinese astrology and Machen Pomra, the riding god, is the symbol that unites all Tibetan nomads.

Le pèlerinage de l'Amnye Machen rassemble les peuples Tibétains qui viennent célébrer Machen Pomra, la plus importante divinité de la région des monts KunLun dans l'état Chinois du Qinghai. Lorsque j'ai fait la partie sud de la montagne en 2014, c’était l'année du cheval dans l'astrologie chinoise et Machen Pomra, le dieu cavalier, est le symbole qui rassemble tous les peuples nomades Tibétains.

This pilgrimage is an 180 km walk around the sacred mountain. It takes eight days by foot, three days horse riding and forty days for those prostrating every three steps as a religious journey.

Ce pèlerinage fait un tour de 180km autour de la montagne sacrée. Il faut huit jours à pieds, trois jours à cheval et quarante jours en se prosternant tous les trois pas.

The pilgrimage allows the pilgrim to lighten karma but also to bring blessings to their relatives. I saw a grandmother completing the course, bowing in order to relieve her family's karma while her grandchildren carried the travel bags.

Faire le pèlerinage permet au pèlerin d'alléger son karma mais aussi d'apporter bénédiction pour son entourage. J'ai pu voir une grand-mère effectuer le parcours en se prosternant pour le karma de toute sa famille pendant que ses petits enfants portaient les sacs de voyage.

During the journey, families bring with them the traditional Stampa, Tibetan roasted barley flour. Stampa is mixed by hand in a bowl with some yak butter and hot tea. The mixture is eaten as a raw dough.

Au cours du voyage, les familles emmènent avec eux la traditionnel Stampa, la farine d'orge grillée Tibétaine. On la délaye avec les doigts dans un bol où l'on y verse du thé chaud au beurre de yack.

This Tibetan pilgrimage in Chinese territory is subject to the constant expansion of China's urbanisation. There is a highway project proposing to go around the sacred mountain. China wants to bring tourism and economic development in these remote valleys where nomadic yaks graze.

Ce pèlerinage Tibétain en territoire chinois est soumis à l’incessante expansion urbaine de la Chine. Le projet de construction d'une autoroute faisant le tour de la montagne sacrée laisse perplexe les pèlerins. La chine veut amener le tourisme et le développement économique dans ces vallées reculées où les nomades font paître leurs yacks.
